Katerine Hackl · Pottery & Tiles

New Jersey State House Annex

The NJ State House Annex underwent major restoration in 1993-1995. Katherine Hackl was selected by the the New Jersey Building Authority, the New Jersey State Council of the Arts and the Joint Venture Architects to create new artwork that integrated with historic Herman Mueller tile located in the ground floor elevator lobby. She chose to illustrate Rudyard Kipling's "Just So Stories", which had animal characters and scenes similar to those in the historic tile, yet added a new narrative element to the installation. All the glazes for this project were developed to reproduce the historic palette and texture of the 1930s Arts and Crafts glazes.
